David Garrett on "Good Morning America!"

Program Description

Known in Britain as “the David Beckham of the violin,” David Garrett has touched hearts and astounded audiences wherever he has performed. From Vivaldi to Queen to Michael Jackson, the young German violinist weaves classical standards with rock and pop favorites for a thrilling performance in his first PBS special, DAVID GARRETT: LIVE IN BERLIN.

Accompanied by a symphony orchestra and rock band, Garrett enthralls the audience in Berlin’s stunning Tempodrom concert arena with his talent and rousing repertoire. Among his riveting performances, he cleverly re-interprets Queen’s ballad, “Who Wants to Live Forever”; gives AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” a memorable new twist; and opens with the rousing “He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Background

Following his star status in Europe and the Far East, virtuoso violinist David Garrett is quickly on his way to conquering the U.S.  His star shines brightly particularly in Germany, where he has played sold-out arenas, and garnered two gold discs for both of his records released there.  On the famous Last Night of Proms in the UK, he played to a crowd of 40,000 people, and also appeared at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in an impressive six concerts in seven days.  His sole album released there became a Top 20 chart fixture as well.

America has been quick to recognize David’s incredible technique, incomparable skill and unrelenting passion for the violin.  He debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart, where he remained for three consecutive weeks.  To date, he has not fallen below #2, and also topped the New Artist chart.

Garrett’s mainstream appeal and strikingly good looks – David landed a deal as a global brand ambassador for Banana Republic in 2009 – combined with his musical talent have opened doors to performances on Good Morning America, CBS Saturday Early Show, CNN and the Today Show.  Garrett also exposure on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Here & Now” and audiences responded: his self-titled US debut became one of Amazon’s Top 10 Best-Sellers, and reached #1 on iTunes Classical Album chart.
